Beginning the Journey...

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step is an old Chinese proverb. The same could be said for writing a book. If you put enough words together you get a sentence. Put enough sentences together you get a paragraph. Coble together enough paragraphs and you get a chapter. Finally, if you put enough chapters together you have written a book!
The is how I came to write The New American Reich. Much like a vagabond, I only had general themes and ideas of characters when I first started to write, but I knew I had a story inside of me that wanted to come out. Instead of wandering about the countryside I wandered amongst the words inside my mind.
The idea to write a book slowly formed in my mind many years ago. As an avid reader I have been a fan of literature all my life. However, in my opinion, it takes a certain amount of hubris to write a book. Whether a writer’s goal is to compete with literary masters, or pulp fiction authors, the task is daunting. You need to organize your thoughts, emotions, story, and characters, in such a manner so that it may appeal to other people. I had a simple solution for this worry. I wrote the book for myself and that made all the difference.
When I first started writing The New American Reich it did not have a title. It also only had the faintest whiff of a plot. That being said, I started slowly and methodically, putting one foot in front of the other. One day I wrote a page. The next day I had a few pages. The following day I had written a stack of pages. Before long I had a chapter and my characters and plot started to come to life. I would hear the character’s voices inside my head. I would imagine their body language and create a whole backstory which defined how they would act inside the universe I was creating. Before long, these people became real to me, and much later, there was a book in which they lived.
In my coming blog posts I hope to further discuss my journey. Maybe I can help inspire someone else to start their journey. Perhaps I am only talking to myself. In either case, I have found turning my thoughts into words satisfying, so for that reason alone, I will continue to write!
